River Residence
A maisonette on the Danube embankment — warm tones, water at the window and calm in the heart of the city.
The maisonette sits on the Danube embankment, where light arrives reflected off the water and, in the evening, paints the walls in warm tones. We linked the two floors with an open staircase and a gallery so the space reads as one breathing whole.
The client — a couple who travel a great deal — wanted a home they would always be glad to return to. Calm, warm, without superfluous gestures. The design rests on three materials: walnut, troweled plaster and textile surfaces in earthy colours.
We didn't start from scratch. We started from what the space already held within it.
The lower floor belongs to the day zone — living room, kitchen and dining that flow into one another without sharp divisions. A walnut unit and library form the warm core of the space around which daily life unfolds.
We left the large window towards the water free of heavy curtains — only a fine textile that filters the afternoon light. The troweled plaster shifts its tone as the sky above the river changes.
The upper floor is private — bedroom, dressing room and bathroom joined into one suite. The gallery above the living room connects both levels visually and draws light deep into the plan.
We designed the bathroom as a hushed room for the end of the day: matte stone, warm lighting and a bath placed so that a sliver of sky and water is always in view.
